Known as the “Pomodorino Vesuviano”

This little cousin of the popular San Marzano tomato is grown in Mount Vesuvius National Park and has held DOP status since 2009.

These plump, deep red beauties archieve their rich, distinctive flavor not only from the volcanic soil in which they grow, but also from their treatment after harvest: they are strung in bunches and hung (piennolo means “hanging” in the Neapolitan dialect) in caves to dry, a technique that has been used for centuries.

A Staple at Zooma

We use DOP piennolo tomatoes in our famous Spaghetti Piennolo. They are cooked directly in the pasta where they pop open and give flavor to the spaghetti, or any of our other house-made pastas, and are then are finished with garlic, extra virgin olive oil, and basil.
