Celebrating Tradition & New Beginnings: La Vigilia at Trattoria Appia
Dear Friends and Family,
As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the moments that have brought us together. The holidays are a season of light—a time to pause, to cherish our loved ones, and to look forward to the New Year with hearts full of hope and warmth.
This Christmas season, we invite you to join us in one of our most beloved Italian-American traditions: La Vigilia, or The Feast of the Seven Fishes.
A tradition rooted in Southern Italy, this celebration (known originally as La Vigilia di Natale) began as a spiritual vigil.
Historically, families would abstain from meat on the eve of the Nativity to purify their bodies and sharpen their minds for the feast day to come. Over time, what began as a fast evolved into a glorious feast of the sea.
While the specific number of dishes varies by region—some say seven for the sacraments, others thirteen for the Apostles—the spirit remains the same. It is a celebration of abundance, resilience, and the comfort of gathering around a table with those we hold dear.
Our 2025 La Vigilia menu embodies the spirit of this timeless culinary custom. We have blended classic preparations with new, vibrant flavors to bring you a meal that feels both nostalgic and exciting.
From our family to yours, we wish you a holiday filled with peace, joy, and delicious moments. Buon Natale and a very Happy New Year!
With love and gratitude,
The Trattoria Appia Team
